Drivers License Name Change

Before changing your name on your driver’s license in the state of Alabama, you need to visit your Social Security Administration office first. Having an updated social security card will be necessary in the process of changing your name on your driver’s license.

The reasons people need to change their name on a driver’s license may vary, but the most common two reasons are name changes due to a marriage or a divorce. Regardless of the reason for the change, you must get this done as soon as possible so all of your personal records are up to date with your correct name and address.

Most changes to a driver’s license have the option of completing online or by mail, but for a name change you MUST visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office for completion of this process.

The process to changing your name on a driver’s license is a simple and easy process, as long as you do things in the order required. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Visit your Social Security Administration Office

A visit with the SSA, as mentioned previously, must be done before you visit the DMV. When you visit the SSA, you will be required to do the following things:

  • Have a completed application (Form SS-5)
  • Proof of Name Change – This may include a marriage license, divorce decree or court order.
  • Proof of Identity – This may include a driver’s license, passport, or Alabama ID card.
  • Proof of US Citizenship – This may include a certificate of US citizenship, US birth certificate or certificate of naturalization.

You may submit the completed forms online or by mail, or by visiting the SSA in person. Once you have an updated social security card, you can more forward in the process of obtaining an updated driver’s license with your new name.

  1. Visit Your Local DMV

Once you have changed your name on your social security card, you are clear to visit the DMV. Upon visiting the Department of Motor Vehicles in your county, you will need the following information to update your name on your license:

  • Your existing Alabama driver’s license
  • Your social security card with your new name included
  • Proof of your name change – This again may include a marriage license, divorce decree or court order.
  • Your payment for the service of replacing your license

When you visit the DMV for a name change, you will leave with a temporary driver’s license with your updated information. This must stay with you until your replacement arrives in the mail in a few days.

Payment for changing your name on a driver’s license or learner’s permit is $31.25.

Once you complete the two required steps of updating your social security card and then visiting the DMV and updating your driver’s license, and paying your fee, you will have successfully updated your name on your driver’s license.

It is a little tedious but in the end very helpful that the social security card is required first, because you can check two things off the list of things you need to update when you have a change to personal information. If you have any other questions regarding a change to your Alabama drivers license, visit the DMV website for other advice and suggestions to obtain a new and updated license. The form required for updating your social security card is also available at the DMV website.
